Why is protein shake part of a successful nutrition program? As Personal Trainers we are asked this question all the time
and there are many reasons why.
First let me start with meal replacement shakes. We all know that in order to keep our metabolism working properly we need
to eat 5 – 6 small balanced meals a day spaced apart by 2 ½ to 3 hour gaps. Balanced meaning the proper ratio of proteins, fats
and carbohydrates. These shakes are meant to replace a solid meal yet provide us with all the necessary nutrients for proper
body function meaning our ability to burn body fat and grow lean muscle.
Now let’s move on to whey protein shakes. When we workout we deplete our muscles of glycogen and build up lactic acid.
Our bodies are amazing machines and will send out an enzyme called cortizol to clean up the damage we have just done to
our muscle. In order to spare our lean muscle and help it grow we must feed it. Post workout our muscles scrambling to absorb
everything they can to recover. Whey protein is the perfect muscle food because it’s fast absorbing and predigested so you get optimal results.
There you have it! So next time you finish your workout be sure to stop and order a protein shake to help fuel your body. Also if you
have questions about what to combine with your shakes don’t be afraid to ask one of our trainers for advice.
